MODEN, William James

No.18120, Private, William James MODEN
Aged 23

7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Thursday 22nd February 1917

William Moden was born on 18th August 1893 in Dullingham (Newmarket Q3-1893 3B:494), baptised in 1893 in Dullingham, son of David and Maria Sophia MODEN (née PEARSON).

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at High Street, Stetchworth with his father David MODEN [37] road locomotive driver, born Fulbourn; his mother Maria Sophia [44] born Trinity, Cambridge; sister Emily [5] born Dullingham and half sister Florence PEARSON [22] born Trinity, Cambridge.

1911 census...Aged 17, a stud farm labourer, he was at High Street, Stetchworth with his parents.

No Cheveley connection has been found other than his mother's address from the CWGC was 65 Little Green, Cheveley and the pension card which places her at 13 Ceveley Green , otherwise he would seem to be a candidate for the Stetchworth memorial.

He enlisted in Newmarket in January 1915.
There is no record found of how he died, but the 7th Suffolks were not in the front line at that time and William was the only death that week.
